While reflecting on a line in a Chinese soap opera, I realize how aptly and wisely it sums up the idea behind designful.

Purpose-driven life is great marketing. Good for type #2 people. Designful living is descriptive. "A designful life" can be marketing term, to remind category 4 people that our purpose may not be singular, but more like a lifestyle of exploration, but all with intent, purpose, and innovation. What is the role of our lives, even if we have found eternal meaning
through Jesus Christ? My answer is that each of our individual
lives is blessed with its particular context, environment, background,
and surroundings. We start to live fully only when we fully
accept and embrace all that is around us: our family, roots, race,
country, culture, history, our personal talent, abilities, dreams,
desires, interests.
Designful living is to offer our own design
(approach, solution, reconsideration, style) in every aspect of our
lives, in light of the particular context that we are in, much like
re-modeling and interior design a new house with its peculiar
surroundings to make it a personalized home. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Ivy League trained in math, physics, technology, science, as well as an
appreciation for the arts and humanity subjects, and furthermore,
finding the meaning of life in Jesus Christ, I have continued to ask
the remaining yet critical question: what is the role and purpose of my
life? My answer to that will be elaborated in this site. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

The introductory chapter of Hofstede's famous text lays out a clear
perspective of human interaction, draws me to the relevance of

Outside of architectural world, few people mention design. We
have seen Don Norman from Psychology background, Jacob Nielsen the Web
Usability Guru, and will talk about Tufte from the visual explanation
world, and possibly Nathan Sherdoff of the Design experience.
Today I went to a talk by Petroski, interacted with him, and find his
large collection of books fascinating, on his thoughts of the design of
everyday objects from an engineering perspective.

Don Norman is famous
for pointing out faulty designs of everyday things. Jacob Nielson and Don Norman formed
the nngroup.com. Here are my notes on his various books (all available in public library.)
Main lessons:
- design principles: intuitive interface, visible alternatives, and clear
feedback and confirmation.
- Phases of high tech marketing: A. innovation, when performance and
features are demanded, and B. commodity, when customer satisfaction is
demanded.

Jakob Nielsen's Designing Web Usability is sort of the bible for the field. (His other 3 books are also available in public libraries.) Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Results of high quality and high precision work comes not necessarily from experience or knowledge, but from the deep humility, which stems from respect for the subject or toward the goal, that will lead to careful andtreatment of details.

Just as the proverbial man who thinks it sufficient to give enough
money to the wife or the kids will ultimately fail in his role as a
husband and father, so too a company or manager that merely thinks the
salary to be the only factor in employee retention. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Fast Company article has a quote: "Frugality triggers
creativity." Indeed, with many factors and concerns in context,
the designful solution satisfy all of them by achieving the equilibrium
balance of all the forces present. Write Comment (0 Comments) |
